Feeding your Koi

Koi are an all around investment and proper feeding of your Koi and other pond life is very important.  Just as we feed ourselves, the health, growth, and longevity of your Koi depends on proper nutrition and proper amounts of food.

The growth rate and well being of the Koi will largely depend on the quality and type of food.  If you feed the Koi a poor diet, the quality of the fish may suffer.  If you feed the Koi a healthy diet of some of the best foods in today’s market, you will see the effect in your Koi’s body weight and color.

The temperature of the water should be kept in mind when planning the proper times to feed Koi.  Their digestive system shuts down during the cold water temperatures.

Here are our recommendations for feeding based on water temperatures:

Below 45 degrees    – Do not feed Koi

46 – 55 degrees        – Feed twice per week.

55 – 59 degrees        – Feed 4 times per week

60 – 70 degrees        – Feed twice daily. Begin higher protein foods

Above 70 degrees    – Feed high protein foods and add color-enhancing foods if you wish

Regardless of temperature, never feed your Koi more than they can consume within five minutes.  It’s better to feed more often in consumable portions than to feed too much all at once.
